This two-week, advanced survey of toxicology reviews the principles of toxicology and mechanisms of toxic action, and applies knowledge gained to human health, developmental and reproductive toxicology, environmental epidemiology, and human, carcinogen and environmental risk assessment. This graduate equivalent course is designed for professionals in industry, government or education who are currently working or planning to work in areas related to toxicology and requires that learners have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, with course work in statistics, chemistry and biology.
Classes include formal lectures in which basic background and principles of specific areas of toxicology will be presented and applied case studies which will illustrate and build on lecture content.
Industry, government or education personnel who are planning to or are currently working in areas related to toxicology.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the Advanced Principles of Toxicology course, the successful student will be able to:
- Understand the basic principles of and have current, cutting-edge knowledge in environmental and human health toxicology.
- Understand the processes used and interpret toxicological data for humans and organisms in the environment.
- Understand the data requirements and apply knowledge of the techniques and procedures to assess risk in human health and the ecosystem.
- Conduct human and ecotoxicological risk assessments.
Assessment: Some sections of the course will include a take-home assignment or quiz. Graduate students are required to complete the assignments. Open Learning participants may complete the assignments if they wish to receive course credit. Assignment information and schedule will be included in the course manual.
